Runesinging villages

Kalevala
The village of Kalevala is the regional center of the Kalevala area. The historic monument “Lönnrot’s Pine” is not only a “carte-de-visite” of the Kalevala village but the place of great interest for all guests of this beautiful land as well. The granary of Yamanen is the only surviving to our time building where Elias Lönnrot stayed while he was traveling around the northern part of Karelia. One of the historical and architectural sights of the village called “Moberg’s House” is a wooden edifice built according to the project of the Canadian Finns Moberg and Vallery in 1926. In 1984 the memorial museum of local epic tellers was organized in the house of the narrator named Maria Remshu. In 1999 on the 150th anniversary of the epos “Kalevala” the Kalevala National Museum of Regional Studies was opened.

Haikola
The village of Haikola is the homeland of Ortjo Stepanov, who is the national writer of the Republic of Karelia. The village is situated on the island where seven dwelling houses (the end of the 19th-beginning of the 20th centuries) are placed. The family house of the writer O.Stepanov has been also preserved in the village. Every year in July they organize the literary festival “Rodichi” in the village of Haikola.

Jushkozero
The village of Jushkozero enchants travelers with its peace and beauty. The village is stretched out along the banks of the river Chirka-Kem. The local sights are suspension bridges, which connect different parts of the village. Dobrynina gardens are situated on the island. A lot of architectural monuments dated from the end of the 18th beginning of the 19th centuries have been preserved in the village. They are built according to the traditions of the Karelian architecture and saved in the original form. The Orthodox church of the Assumption of the Virgin was built in the village

Voinitsa
The ancient Karelian village Voinitsa is the homeland of the famous epic tellers Ontrei Malinen and Vaassila Kieleväinen. The monument called The stone of Vaassila by Finnish architect Marti Aiha was erected on the other shore of the lake Upper Kyutto in 1995. The most part of the tourists is interested in the archaic architecture and the nature of this place: the waterfall Kumeo and beautiful places for fishing and hunting on the lake Upper Kuytto, the Maria makkovein orthodox feast in August
